Healthy Aging? There's an App for That

Grandma

Enter the mobile medical application market. The future is here. Mobile applications are now available that can hold and track a person's medical history and information. This gives doctors up-to-the-minute information in the care of a person while making life easier and less stressful for the family.

Ringful has plans to help users change their behavior with more transparency and information. They currently have approximately 19,000 active users using their application to record blood pressure, pulse measurements and workout routines, as well as to find information about local hospitals. The company offers free versions of its application and premium versions for $4.99 with additional charting and analytical capabilities.

oneThe Blood Pressure/Memory Connection

BPMonitorIt is not news that the same triggers for heart disease--high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes--also seem to increase the risk of dementia. The results from a variety of new studies strongly suggest that controlling blood pressure just might be the best protection yet known against dementia. And it appears to be the resulting scarring from hypertension that builds up decades before memory problems appear.

So if there was one thing to do earlier in life to hedge bets against getting Alzheimer's, that would be controlling hypertension. Not only is there little downside to controlling high blood pressure as it relates to dementia, it is also the leading cause of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. Read more.
twoStroke Risk Linked to Caregiving Stress

StressedThe results of a new study published in the journal Stroke show that caregiver spouses who find their responsibilities highly stressful may be at increased risk for stroke. The study looked at people who provide in-home care for an ailing spouse and showed that male spouse caregivers benefit from getting more day to day help in providing care. (Probably also in asking directions!)

threeDon't Pop a Pill: Get a Dog

DogThe benefits of having a pet range from a better reason to get out of bed in the morning, to expanding the social network through neighborhood travels, to improving cardiovascular health, to combating depression, to solving social isolation issues and to getting more regular exercise. fourPumping Iron is Great for the Ladies

PumpIronSeveral new studies reinforce what we already know- exercise is good for you. What is new in these studies is that weight training is particularly good for you. Among other interesting and noteworthy findings was that benefits from weight training occurred among those who were overweight or obese as well. Plus, starting to lift weights at any age resulted in improvement.

Improvement in performance on cognitive tests of memory and learning as well as in executive functions such as decision-making and conflict resolution was found in the weight training group. The control group who also exercised, but did aerobics and not muscle-strengthening, saw improvement, but not as significant.

These findings are reported in a series of independently conducted studies reporting on the effects of exercise in healthy older adults, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. They confirm the positives of exercise as a prescription against the onset of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, osteoarthritis and dementia.
